As the year turned over, I reflected on the number of reachouts I have received with the same question : How can I break into VC ?
The competition is fierce, and the path can be challenging. Here’s how to navigate the journey and increase your chances of success.
But, lets understand the landscape first :
✳️ High Demand, Low Supply: The venture capital industry is competitive, with limited roles at top VC firms
✳️ Growth Opportunities: A career in VC opens doors to influential opportunities with startups, entrepreneurs, and investors
✳️ Impactful Work: As a VC, you have the chance to shape industries by investing in companies that could change the world
How to Break Into VC :
1️⃣ Get the Right Experience
While having a degree from a prestigious university can help, most VC firms prefer candidates with real-world #startup or #investing experience. Even I've had one of those too at the 0 to 1 stage as well as, angel investing ( not the "herd-investing" kinds thru angel networks but solus calls and, lost some precious savings ouch it hurt but learnt the best lessons I apply everyday )
Many successful VCs come from such backgrounds -its more powerful than a resume with only a "Magna-cum-Laude"
2️⃣ Build a Powerful Network
#Networking is everything in VC ( See my earlier posts on this topic)
A significant portion of opportunities come through personal connections rather than job postings. Attend industry events, engage with professionals on LinkedIn, and connect with others in the startup and investment ecosystem. Relationships often make all the difference in getting a foot in the door. I see people giving up after an inmail on LinkedIn. You're hardly entrepreneurial if that's your entire toolkit
3️⃣ Gain Practical Experience
Start by looking for internships at VC firms or in startups they have invested in. This hands-on experience will make you an attractive candidate to VC firms later on. Target well.
4️⃣ Understand Firm Culture & Dynamics
Each VC firm has a unique culture. There are 2 kinds of firms in India today :
- Promoter Mindset : Single person/Family control
- Truly Institutional : Professionals united on shared values
Very easy to figure it out but no one will tell you

5️⃣ Be Prepared for High Competition
The VC world is incredibly competitive. Start by looking for positions at smaller VC firms, which may be more accessible and still offer valuable experience
6️⃣ Stay Committed and Persistent
Breaking into VC takes time and persistence. Stay focused on building experience, expanding your network, and learning as much as possible. The journey may be longer than you expected, but with dedication, you can get there
My best wishes to all of you as you take a fresh position on BreakingintoVC in 2025 !
